July 2022 recorded in the history books

If you’ve been outdoors at any point in the past month, you know it’s been extremely hot. July 2022 will go down in the history books of Central Texas for many reasons. In this article, we will talk more about these reasons and learn more about how hot this month is.

July 2022 is now The hottest month of July ever at Waco Regional Airport. The average maximum temperature during the month was 103.7 degrees. This breaks the old record for the highest average monthly temperature for July in 2011 at 102.8 degrees. We broke that record almost completely. To put this heat into perspective, the normal high temperature for July should be around 96.7 degrees.

We compared this summer to the summer of 2011. That’s when we scored over 100 degrees all day in one year. This record was 90 days. We’ve already logged this year (as of July 31) a temperature of 100°C for 47 days, which is more than halfway to what we saw in 2011. Those 47 days are now 10 on the list for most 100° days annually.

As of July 31, Waco Regional Airport was currently on a run of 30 straight days where temperatures were at or above 100 degrees. These 30 days connect the third longest-ever 100-degree streak in 1969. The longest streak of 100-degree temperatures is 44 days in 2011 from June 30 through August 12.

Now we’ve only had a day short of tying the record for most 100° days recorded in a single month which is 31. It happened again in July 1980 and again in 2011. The average amount of 100° days for July is only 8.6 . We broke it this year.

We set 6 new highs over the course of July. Fortunately, we didn’t break the record for the hottest temperature ever recorded at Waco Regional Airport. This record is 114 degrees on July 23, 2018. The highest temperature last month was 109 degrees on the tenth.

This month was not only scorching, but also devastatingly dry. 30 of the 31 days in July were rain-free. We only recorded 0.01 inches of rain in the last month. The other driest months in July were 2015, 1993 and 1930 when no rain accumulation occurred and there were only trace amounts in 1963 and 1924.

The 0.01 inches we saw last month is 1.81 inches less than the normal 1.82 inches we see in July. We are currently in a dry streak of 17 days as of July 31. We tied 1980 to the driest July 6th on record receiving only 0.01 inches of rain.

We also know that the entirety of 2022 has been a very dry year not only in Central Texas, but throughout the entire Lone Star State. Drought conditions were getting worse across the state. As of Thursday, July 26, 99.18% of the state was in some form of drought, making less than 1% of the state without any drought.

At Waco Regional Airport, we should usually see 21.49 inches of rain as we approach the beginning of August. We’re now over a foot, 12.63 inches as of July 31, below where we’re usually that far in a year.

So far in 2022, Waco Regional Airport has captured 8.86 inches of rain and this puts us in second place in terms of drought so far. The only other driest year was 1925 when only 5.71 inches of rain was recorded throughout the year. This time last year, more than 19 inches of rain was recorded at Waco Regional Airport.

As July draws to a close and August approaches, we’re heading into what is statistically the hottest time of the year here in Central Texas. The normal high temperature for August is 97.1 degrees with the highest record high temperature being 112 degrees in 1969. There are usually 11.4 days when temperatures rise at 100 degrees or more. The highest average monthly temperature (hottest) for August is 105.2 degrees and the dip was in 2011.

Looking at the first week of August, you can expect the same hot and dry conditions to continue. Triple numbers and very isolated rain chances continue in central Texas. Stay safe and cool in this heat. Before you know it, fall and winter will be here!
