The Alvernia University Global Ambassador Scholarship is now available for both transfer students and overseas first-year students.

Scholarships for Students seeking a Bachelor’s Degree

Alvernia University offers a limited number of international scholarships to qualified undergraduate degree-seeking students.

Interested students must complete a separate scholarship application in addition to an application for admission. 

All undergraduate students who wish to study at Alvernia University must complete an online Alvernia admission application.

After being admitted to the university, undergraduate international students may apply for this scholarship opportunity, which consists of several levels of support ranging from $10,000 to $24,000 per year as a merit award.

These scholarships are offered to first-year international students and those transferring from another college or university located outside the United States.

The Alvernia University Global Ambassador Scholarship Award may be worth between $10,000 and $22,000 per year as a merit-based reward.

All eligible international freshman and transfer students who choose to pursue a regular undergraduate degree are offered scholarships at Alvernia University at our main Reading campus.

Undergraduate students who meet the requirements can apply for a small number of foreign scholarships through the Alvernia University Global Ambassador Scholarship and pursue their degrees abroad.

All undergraduate applicants to Alvernia University must submit the online Alvernia admissions form separately from the scholarship application.

International undergraduate students who have been accepted to Alvernia University and want to represent their cultures in the USA are eligible to apply for the Global Ambassador Scholarship.

About Alvernia University

Alvernia University is a private Franciscan Roman Catholic university located in Reading, Pennsylvania.

In 2008, the organization, known initially as Alvernia College, changed its name to a university.

Alvernia University was established in 1958 by the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis as a four-year liberal arts college and later as a college for the sisters.

Several of the college’s renovated classrooms and offices were used to teach in elementary and secondary schools prior to 1958.

The college’s first building, Francis Hall, was built in 1926 and formerly housed an orphanage.

Alvernia received a charter from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1960, and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools first recognized the school in 1967.

In 1961, the college accepted its first female lay students. Male students were first admitted as commuting students in 1971 and resident students in 1973.

Alvernia University received status from the Pennsylvania Department of Education in 2008 when it celebrated its 50th anniversary.

It offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and minors. Pre-professional courses in dentistry, law, medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary science can be taken.

Master’s degrees are awarded in occupational therapy, business administration, nursing, community counseling, education, and liberal studies.

The Alvernia University Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program lasts seven years. A doctoral program in leadership is also available.

Since 1967, Alvernia has been recognized by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

The education plan for elementary and secondary teachers has received approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

The occupational therapy program has received full accreditation from the American Council of Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program has received approval from the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing and accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs has accredited the athletic training program in conjunction with the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Athletic Training.

The Social Work program has received approval from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

The Behavioral Health courses have received certification from the Pennsylvania Certification Board.

The Accreditation Council accredits the Business Department for Business Schools and Programs.

The Alvernia University Global Ambassador Scholarship is a merit-based award that provides financial aid ranging from $10,000 to $22,000 annually.

These scholarships are open to transfer students from non-American colleges and universities as well as first-year international freshmen.

Eligibility for Alvernia University Global Ambassador Scholarship

 Alvernia University offers scholarships to each admitted international freshman and transfer student wishing to earn an undergraduate degree as a traditional day student at our main Reading campus.

These merit scholarships are renewable for four years (up to eight semesters), all in the same amount. 

Scholarships cannot be combined with any other award, including a government scholarship; therefore, an applicant cannot apply for an Alvernia International Scholarship if they are already receiving another financial award.

The following covers the eligibility criteria for the 2023/2024 Alvernia University Global Ambassador Scholarship in the USA;

  1. Applicants from all over the world are welcome to submit applications.
  2. Any subject the university offers will be eligible for the scholarship.
  3. International freshmen and transfer students from abroad must be accepted.

The candidates must fulfill all requirements for eligibility.

  • Every grade from every preceding school was present.

Have earned a minimum 3.0 overall cumulative GPA by the May 1 scholarship application deadline.

Meet English proficiency and financial specifications.

 

Completing the Application

Unofficial Grade Report. The student must submit all grades from all previous schools attended.

The applicant must submit all their grades to be evaluated.

The international transcript must be evaluated in the USA system evaluation via NACES member institutions (https://www.naces.org/members)

 

Scholarship Options

Alvernia offers merit-based scholarships for academic excellence among new first‐year and transfer students based on their CGPA:

Presidential Scholarship provides a $24,000 scholarship per year awarded to the top tier of international applications, most academically talented students who performed outstanding academic performance and standardized test scores each year.

Trustees Scholarship provides a $ 23,000 scholarship per year for qualified recipients, creatively adventurous students, with experiences, or achievements.

Veronica Scholarship provides a $22,000 scholarship per year to qualified international students who exhibit leadership potential and a desire to serve as a cultural ambassador in the United States.

Achievement Scholarship provides a $20,000 scholarship per year for students who maintain full-time undergraduate status and meet satisfactory academic progress guidelines depending on GPA calculation.

Heritage Scholarship provides an $18,000 scholarship per year for full-time day students pursuing a bachelor’s degree who maintain satisfactory academic requirements.

Catholic School Scholarship awards $1,000 to first-time, full-time freshmen graduating from a Catholic high school.

It can be combined with other awards as well as incorporated into financial aid packages and will be automatically applied to eligible students’ applications.

Provost Scholarship: This $21,000 scholarship is given to students who have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher from all previous institutions and/or is a members of Phi Theta Kappa.

Bernardine Scholarship: This $19,000 scholarship is given to students who have earned a cumulative GPA between 3.25 and 3.49 from all previous institutions.

Dean Scholarship: This $17,000 scholarship is given to students who have earned a cumulative GPA between 3.0 and 3.24 from all previous institutions.

Transfer Scholarship: This $15,000 scholarship is given to students who have earned a cumulative GPA between 2.5 and 2.99 from all previous institutions.

To continue your scholarship during your studies, you must enroll each semester as a full-time student, which is a minimum of 12 credits, and maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

Outside Scholarship Opportunities

Alvernia University does not have full tuition scholarship opportunities for international students.

While students cannot combine other scholarships with Alvernia awards, international students are highly encouraged to apply for outside scholarship options. Here are some suggested sites:

Tuition and fees: $40,750

Living Expenses/Room & Board: $14,800

Books/Personal/Other Expenses: $5,000

Total: $60,550**

**Above numbers may change slightly based on the applicant’s room and board selection and according to the spending habits, as personal spending will vary from student to student.

When the applicant receives an international scholarship, they should deduct that scholarship amount from the yearly tuition cost.

Alvernia University does not have full-ride scholarship opportunities for international students.
